Crafting Washi by Hand

Founded in 1653 as a washi paper wholesaler in Nihonbashi, this long-established shop continues to preserve Japan’s rich washi culture, offering around 500 varieties of handmade washi. In the workshop, participants experience the traditional art of washi papermaking by scooping fibers suspended in water with a sugeta (papermaking mould) and allowing the paper to dry. By making a sheet of washi with their own hands, visitors gain a deeper appreciation for the care, patience, and craftsmanship behind one of Japan’s oldest traditions. The same building also houses a shop, a museum, and a gallery, where visitors can further explore the history of washi, the skills of its artisans, and the many stories behind this traditional craft.
